Traffic convictions often result in more severe consequences than fines and court costs! For example, in Virginia, for each of the following convictions, the driver is assessed the respective demerit points:

• 1-9 miles over the speed limit - 3 demerit points
• 10-19 miles over the speed limit - 4 demerit points
• 20 miles over the speed limit - 6 demerit points
• Reckless driving - 6 demerit points
• Driving on a revoked or suspended license - 6 demerit points
• Driving under the influence of alcohol - 6 demerit points
 
These convictions in Virginia are usually reported to the driver's home state and will be reflected on the driver's record. Insurance companies calculate a driver's automobile insurance premiums based on the number and type of moving violations reported. In addition to increased insurance premiums, some convictions may result in a suspension of one's driving privilege and even incarceration (i.e. reckless driving, driving on a revoked/suspended license, driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs).
